Sunday’s SpaceX launch will start off the NG-21 mission, so named in light of the fact that it will be the 21st Cygnus cargo flight to the ISS.
The Cygnus vehicle that is flying on NG-21 is known as the S.S. Richard “Dick” Scobee, after the NASA space explorer who told the ill-fated STS-51-L mission of the space shuttle Challenger. Scobee and his six crewmates passed on when Challenger detonated soon after takeoff on Jan. 28, 1986.
The freighter is loaded with almost 8,200 pounds of supplies on NG-21, including a range of scientific gear. Among the analyses are Rotifer-B2, which will concentrate on the impacts of spaceflight on DNA fix in the rotifer species Adineta vaga, and MVP Cell-07, which will analyze how bioprinted or engineered liver tissue acts in microgravity.
Two mini cubesats are hitching a ride to the ISS on NG-21 too, as a feature of NASA’s ELaNa (Educational Launch Of Nanosatellites) program. The pair will convey from the ISS after the Cygnus docks.
The S.S. Richard “Dick” Scobee is supposed to remain docked with the ISS until January 2025, when it will depart to burn up in Earth’s atmosphere.
